Coles is one of three major supermarket brands in Australia. Along with Woolworths and Aldi, the three companies has almost 70% of the industry market share.
Wesfarmers bought the Coles Group in the depth of the GFC and it was one of its best investments. The new group was subsequently demerged from Wesfarmers in late 2019 and it has gradually sold its interest in group.
The current iteration of the Coles Group is a standalone company managed by its own board and management team.

Coles has historically lagged Woolworths in market share and profitability but it is still one of the most profitable supermarkets in world given the tight market structure in Australia.
2020 supermarket industry report by Roy Morgan shows Aldi has made progress in taking market share from the majors but it is more look like Aldi is benefiting from IGA’s demise.
